As soon as Fender comes out with the Spanish guitar (1950) they get going on the bass which makes it's debut in 1951. In 1953 Fender is poised to introduce its updated Spanish guitar, the Stratocaster which sports the double cutaways of the Precision Bass. Once the Stratocaster is finished its safe to assume that Fender wanted to update the Precision Bass to match the Stratocaster (rather than the Telecaster). That's where this bass comes in. The story that comes with it is that it was a "shop mule" that Freddie Tavares wound up with and gave to his friend Roger Binette. This bass began as a 1st version slab-body altered with comfort contours, alteration to lower cutaway, a clear, reverse painted pickguard in a Strat-like shape and several paint colors including gold metallic and lake placid blue.

If there had been no electric bass, there would have been no rock and roll. Quite possibly this was Leo's most significant gift to the world of electric music. One man's opinion.
